Reclaiming Your Time and Energy This January: A Guide for all Women but even more important if you have ADHD

The holiday season can be a whirlwind of activity, expectations, and social gatherings. For many women, this period can bring feelings of overwhelm as we try to navigate too many people, too many responsibilities, and too little time for ourselves.

Now that January is here, it’s the perfect opportunity to slow down, reclaim your time and energy, get away from the sensory overwhelm, and really embrace the introspective energy of winter.

Winter is a natural time for resting and “wintering” — a chance to pause, reflect, and nurture yourself. However, the low light and cold weather can make staying positive and energetic a challenge. Here are some gentle tips and strategies to help you care for yourself this January, especially if you’re navigating life with ADHD.

1. Embrace the Power of Small Joys

It’s easy to think self-care has to involve big gestures, but often, the simplest acts bring the most comfort. Pour yourself a warm cup of tea in a beautiful china cup, light a candle with a scent you love, or curl up with a soft blanket and a good book. These little moments of joy can be grounding and help you reconnect with yourself.

2. Honour Your Natural Rhythms

Winter is a season of introspection and lower energy. Allow yourself to rest more and set realistic expectations for what you can accomplish. Give yourself permission to say no to activities that don’t serve you and create space for quiet time to recharge.

3. Create a Gentle Routine

A simple, nurturing routine can help anchor your day and reduce feelings of overwhelm. Start with something small, like a morning ritual that includes a mindful moment or a short walk to get some fresh air. It doesn’t need to take very long – just 5 minutes of reading an inspiring book and stepping on your doorstep to take a few breaths can be all it takes.

Consistency can bring comfort and stability, especially during the darker winter months.

4. Light Up Your Environment

Low light can affect your mood and energy levels. Make your spaces brighter with warm lighting, open curtains during the day, or consider using a light therapy lamp (SAD lamps) to boost your mood and help regulate your circadian rhythm. Surround yourself with things that make you feel good, like soft textures, uplifting colors, or plants.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

If you’re feeling low or struggling with energy, remind yourself it’s okay. ADHD can amplify feelings of guilt or frustration when we don’t meet our own expectations.

Be gentle with yourself, and focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t.

6. Lean on Your Community…family, friends… or an online support group

Having ADHD can sometimes feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Reach out to supportive friends, family, or communities, like local walking groups or online Facebook groups. Sharing your experiences and hearing others’ can be incredibly validating and uplifting.

7. Nourish yourself

Nourish your Body and Mind
Prioritise activities that make you feel good physically and mentally. Enjoy wholesome, warming foods, take a soothing bath, or try gentle movement like yoga or mindful dancing. Activities that combine care for your body and mind can be deeply restorative.

8. Set Boundaries with Your Time

January is a great time to reset your boundaries. Practise saying no to commitments that drain your energy and yes to things that bring you joy and calm. Use tools like timers or planners to help you stay on track and avoid overwhelm.

9. Celebrate Your Wins

Remember to acknowledge the things you do achieve, no matter how small. Checking off even one item on your to-do list or taking a moment to rest is a win. Celebrate it and remind yourself you’re doing your best.

This January, give yourself permission to pause, reflect, and prioritise your needs.

Winter is a season for slowing down, and it’s okay to embrace that. You deserve the same care and attention you give to others. Whether it’s through a small ritual or a larger act of self-care, each step you take to nurture yourself brings you closer to balance and calm.

And remember you can use my relaxations to help you ground and embrace the slower pace of January.
